Sweet Gum Balls
The sweet gum tree reminds us of two things: bright red fall foliage and the bountiful supply of spiky green balls they produce. About an inch in width, the balls, actually the fruit of the sweet gum tree, dangle on a long thin stem, falling to the ground and eventually turning light brown with age.
A favorite in the craft world, they are used for everything from children's crafts to Christmas ornaments. They are also useful in the garden. Simply place a ring of sweet gum balls around your hostas to discourage slugs and snails.
